Visitors entering Thaïland must have a valid passport (your passport must be valid at least for 6 more months date of entry in the kingdom).
Stays under 30 days
Visitors, members of E.U., coming to Thailand as tourists, don't need any visa if their stay is not going to exceed 30 days (and of course if you have a return ticket) : this is " transit without visa ". It is free of charge. Entry in Thailand can be made by any transportation mean.
Visitors who entered in Thaïland without visa are not allowed to stay more than 30 days, except case of force majeure (sickness, plane delay). In case of stay exceeding 30 days, you have to contact one of the thai embassies existing in foreign countries (preferably the embassy located in your own country). " Transit without visa " is not renewable. Then it is also strictly forbidden to work in Thailand when visiting the country as a tourist.
Stays lasting more than 30 consecutive days or without a return ticket
Ask for a tourist visa which allows you to stay 60 days, eventually extendable in Thailand for 30 more days (ask Immigration office in Bangkok for permisssion).
To get a tourist visa, you must provide :
You can get your visa if you go personnaly to thai embassies or consulates abroad and bring these documents with you. Some consulates will also send your visa by post if you send all above required documents with a cheque of 30 € / CHF 45 / £25.00 in the name of "General Consulate Général of Thaïland" and a stamped enveloppe for registered letter in your name and address to allow them to return your passport. In all cases, enquire before sending documents. Count around 3 days to get your visa (post time is not included).
Visas are available for 90 days date of emission. You must enter Thailand during those 90 days. Duration of stay is counted from arrival date onwards.

Complementay Informations
Ask for a double entry visa : This will allow you to stay 60 days in Thailand each time you enter the country, as long as the second entry in the kingdom is made during the 90 days following the visa delivery. Without this double entry, you will only get a visa for a maximum of 30 days (Go to Visa for stays shorter than 30 days). Same procedure if you plan to visit other countries (Lao, Vietnam etc..) when being in Thailand.
Never stay longer than allowed by your visa!!! Policemen hate that and you will have to pay a fine of 500 bahts or 10 € per day exceeding your visa validity (overstay), when going out of the country. If your visa expires and you are close to Myanmar border, go to Malaysia for a few hours and get a new 30 days visa free of charge.
In any case, if you see you will overstay, go immediately to immigration office and pay the fine. If policemen check you in the street and see your are in overstay, you may go straight to jail...
It is strictly forbidden to work in Thailand while you are there as a tourist.
There is a tax to pay in the airport before leaving the kingdom (500 THB in 2006, 700 THB after 2007.02), and a tax to pay for each domestic flight (50 THB in 2006, 100 THB after 2007.02).
In the plane, before landing, a form for immigration and one for customs will be given to you. Thay are both in english and have to be filled in before going through immigration check.
